Today, October 10th, is World Homeless Day, a global initiative to raise awareness around the needs of people experiencing homelessness locally. It’s a time for the community to get involved in a variety of ways to respond to homelessness by fostering hope through volunteering, improved policy and funding. But as our partners at Community Solutions explain, “one day is not enough to bring attention to the issue and highlight the successes of communities,” so we are joining them this entire week to uplift the important work of the Built for Zero movement.
Since 2018, Rocket Mortgage has been a lead partner of the Built for Zero movement which aims to help more than 100 communities across the country measurably and equitably end homelessness. The core of Built for Zero is about training communities to rebuild their homelessness response systems in a way that is data-driven, collaborative and focused on one clear, shared goal: reaching Functional Zero.
To succeed in Built for Zero means rethinking old ways of doing things and experimenting with new approaches that rely on innovation and creative partnerships. In Detroit, we have made many direct investments to help identify meaningful solutions to address veterans homelessness. For example, we invested in transitioning temporary or transitional shelter housing into permanent supportive housing for veterans in Detroit.
Whether we’re workshopping with thought leaders or supporting another community’s success in reaching Functional Zero, our ultimate goal is to ensure that every American has access to safe and stable housing. Recently, we talked with Built for Zero about our strategic partnership, our shared vision for housing stability, and what makes partnerships effective in the fight to end homelessness.
