Meet Stepha’N Quicksey, who knows firsthand the transformative power of what it means to invest in the community. As Program Manager for Education & Employment at Rocket Community Fund, he’s dedicated to creating the same opportunities that changed his own life.
Growing up on Detroit’s east side and attending Osborn High School, Stepha’N received his first job as a high school freshman and his first college scholarship as a rising sophomore. “Those opportunities played a critical role in my economic stability and ability to pursue postsecondary education as a first-generation college student,” he said. “Being the product of community investment, I feel a deep responsibility to help create those same pathways for other Detroiters.”
Stepha’N joined the Rocket Community Fund just a few months ago, but he has over 15 years of nonprofit experience. His journey spans from facilitating programs for hundreds of children at Neighborhood Service Organization to leading community engagement at Life Remodeled and shaping grantmaking practices at the Skillman Foundation.
So what drives him? “I value the opportunity my role provides to collaborate with partners across the ecosystem to design thoughtful, long-term strategies,” Stepha’N said. “I find the work most rewarding when those strategies translate into real opportunities for Detroiters – whether that means increased access to postsecondary education, career pathways or economic mobility.”
Beyond his work in Detroit, Stepha’N’s appreciation for community extends globally: An avid traveler, Stepha’N has visited many meaningful places to connect with people all over the world. In particular, his experience in the Bahamas left a lasting impression, where he explored the islands’ history which gave him “a deeper appreciation for the people, their resilience, and the strong sense of community that still shape the country today.”
