Meet Whitney Burk, Program Manager on Rocket Community Fund’s Housing Stability team, whose journey from supporting refugee families to expanding housing access across Detroit reflects a deep commitment to her hometown.
In our latest video series, Whitney shares how her path into housing stability work began with an unexpected opportunity. In 2022, she stepped out of her leadership role at Rocket Mortgage to support the Detroit Refugee Network, because, she says, “I felt called to serve in a different way. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”
Working with Samaritas and the City of Detroit, Whitney helped refugee families find housing, furnish homes, enroll children in school, and rebuild their lives. “It was powerful to witness these families start over with such hope and determination,” she reflects. Those experiences taught her that “housing is about so much more than a roof over your head. It is about safety, dignity, and opportunity.”
In this new capacity, Whitney continued to work on housing stability, supporting United Community Housing Coalition, where she helped Detroit residents through HOPE applications, and enroll them in the Make It Home program. This experience helped her gain insight into the systemic barriers that have long prevented Black and Brown families from achieving housing stability.
Now at Rocket Community Fund, Whitney brings that front-line experience to a broader mission: “to help families not only find housing but keep it, and to ensure everyone has a fair chance at stability.”
A born-and-raised Detroiter, Whitney’s passion is personal. “Detroit shaped who I am,” she says. “Every time a family finds housing or a homeowner stays in their home, it reminds me why this work matters.”
