DETROIT, SEPT. 4, 2025 – Rocket Community Fund today announced a $500,000 investment in Year Up United, a nationally recognized workforce development organization that connects talented young adults without four-year college degrees to in-demand careers. The partnership is part of Rocket Community Fund’s broader commitment to expand access to economic opportunity for Detroiters, particularly young adults ages 18–29 who have too often faced barriers to career exposure and growth.
Year Up United’s mission is to end the “Opportunity Divide” – the divide between corporate hiring needs and the untapped talent that could address them. The tuition-free program offers participants from underserved backgrounds technical and professional training, internships and direct career placement. The Rocket Community Fund will help support Year Up United participants in their full-time internships with local businesses and nonprofit organizations, with the goal of transitioning into permanent roles upon completion. Nationally, 80 percent of Year Up United graduates are employed or attending college within four months of completing the program.
“At Rocket Community Fund, we believe talent is distributed equally, but opportunity is not,” said Laura Grannemann, Executive Director, Rocket Community Fund. “Our partnership with Year Up United works to close that gap by creating supportive career opportunities for young adults in Detroit. By investing in the potential of talent that is too often overlooked, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive workforce that reflects the future of our city.”
Rocket Community Fund made an initial $250,000 investment in 2024 to place four Year Up United participants in positions throughout Rocket Companies. The organization is now doubling down on that investment to double the impact.
“Companies in Detroit need talent with the right technical and social skills to drive growth and innovation. Year Up United can provide that talent as well as guidance on how to implement a successful skills-first hiring strategy,” said Cheronda White, Associate Director of Corporate Engagement at Year Up United. “With support from Rocket Community Fund, we’ll be able to serve more young adults and businesses in Detroit as we build a more effective labor market and greater economic opportunity and mobility for all.”
Through continued investments in partnerships like Year Up United, Rocket Community Fund and Rocket Companies are demonstrating how employers can build a more inclusive recruiting strategy that simultaneously prioritizes hiring qualified talent.
Rocket Community Fund’s support for Year Up United is part of the organization’s 10-year, $500 million joint commitment, shared with Gilbert Family Foundation, to build opportunity in Detroit neighborhoods.
